Which AI predicted CPI, PPI and jobs best?
As of 2026-09-13, no AI has a scored record yet: 2 forecasts are locked and waiting for their releases. Two of the Bot Analysis Arena's paper-trading bots — Grok and Astra (an OpenAI model) — are asked, before each scheduled U.S. release, for the number and for the market's first reaction. This is paper research: the forecasts are on the record, the S&P-benchmarked trading results are a separate record, and nothing here is advice.
How it works, in three sentences
Before each scheduled release (CPI, PPI, jobs, retail sales, PCE, FOMC), each Super Bot is handed the same dated evidence pack and asked for a point estimate, an 80% range, a probability that the market closes the first window down, and a stance with a written reason and a stated invalidation. The reply is stamped at receipt — a reply that arrives at or after the release never counts, and one inside the last ten minutes is recorded but never scored. After the print, the scorer grades the number against the actual release and the market call against the actual reaction, and the scored line is added here the next morning.
Two evaluation groups, scored separately: early (reply received at least 1 hour before the release) and short-notice (10 to 60 minutes before). Reply receipt time; a reply at/after release never counts; under 10 minutes is recorded, never scored Policy version ep-2.
Metrics in the scoring set: Consumer inflation cpi-mom, Consumer inflation excluding food and energy core-cpi-mom, Producer final-demand inflation ppi-mom, Monthly change in nonfarm jobs payroll-change, Unemployment rate unemployment, Consumer spending inflation pce-mom, Spending inflation excluding food and energy core-pce-mom, Retail and food-service sales growth retail-mom. Plus a market-reaction-only call on releases with no headline number (FOMC decisions).

| FOMC rate decision | Sep 16, 2026, 2:00 PM ET | market reaction only | 48% | flat | low | 124.4 h | early | awaiting release |
| Retail Sales (Advance Monthly Retail & Food Services), August 2026 2026-08 | Sep 16, 2026, 8:30 AM ET | 0.22% (80% range -0.45% to 0.88%) | 44% | flat | low | 118.9 h | early | awaiting release |
The bot's own recorded reasoning, verbatim:
- FOMC rate decision: Hike odds were already near 70% after hot PPI and the oil spike; the 60-minute CPI tape was mixed (SPY +0.14%, QQQ -0.02%, VIX -3.98%) and 10y yields eased only slightly from multi-year highs. Five days remain, so this is a weak nowcast, not a directional bet. What would void it: A sharp re-pricing of hike odds, a VIX reversal higher with futures breadth turning negative, or 10y yields pushing back through the pre-print highs would void the flat stance.
- Retail Sales (Advance Monthly Retail & Food Services), August 2026: July RSAFS fell to 763602 from 768072, matching the -0.58% last reading. August energy CPI rose to 321.148 from 314.553, which often lifts nominal gasoline sales even if volumes are flat, while claims stayed ~206k and unemployment held 4.1%. Competing case: real goods demand stays soft after that July drop and hot PPI. Interval is wide because auto/gasoline mix is unknown. What would void it: A print at or below July’s -0.58% alongside rising claims or a down-shift in hours/earnings would break the bounce-from-gasoline story.

No release has been scored yet. The first scores can land after the Retail Sales (Advance Monthly Retail & Food Services), August 2026 and FOMC rate decision releases on Sep 16, 2026; a scored line appears here the morning after each print. Until then this page is a record of what was forecast and when, not a record of skill.
Declines, abstentions and failed calls
A bot may decline to forecast; the reason it gives is recorded and shown here unedited. A failed provider call is a failure of the pipe, not a forecast, and is listed as such.

Astra
Latest 2 requests in the window: abstained-or-invalid ×2.
- Sep 11, 2026, 9:40 AM ET — retail-sales-2026-09-16 · retail-mom: abstained — The last reading was -0.582%, while the six-month mean was +0.652%. No supplied August spending breakdown resolves that disagreement. The reference is the previous reading, not consensus, and I cannot justify a calibrated forecast interval.
- Sep 11, 2026, 9:40 AM ET — fomc-2026-09-16 · market-only: abstained — The mixed CPI reaction does not establish the direction of the first 30 minutes after the FOMC announcement. Reported hike probabilities are not independently verified, and there is no scored forecasting record supporting a directional call.
- Sep 11, 2026, 7:10 AM ET — cpi-2026-09-11 · core-cpi-mom: abstained — The supplied six-month mean is 0.1992% and the Cleveland Fed nowcast is 0.20%, not consensus. Without current component detail or a scored forecasting record, I cannot justify a useful departure from that reference or a calibrated market-reaction probability.
- Sep 11, 2026, 7:10 AM ET — cpi-2026-09-11 · cpi-mom: abstained — July's 0.0737%, the six-month mean of 0.3160%, and the 0.36% nowcast give different anchors. September oil strength does not establish August consumer inflation. Missing component contributions leave the reading and opening market reaction insufficiently supported.
- Sep 11, 2026, 7:10 AM ET — retail-sales-2026-09-16 · retail-mom: abstained — The last reading was -0.582%, versus a six-month mean of +0.652%. No August spending breakdown resolves that disagreement. The supplied reference is the last reading, not consensus; I decline both a numerical forecast and an exposure recommendation.
- Sep 11, 2026, 7:10 AM ET — fomc-2026-09-16 · market-only: abstained — The decision follows the pending inflation release. Reported hike probabilities are not independently verified, and higher yields alone do not establish the announcement's subsequent market reaction. I decline a directional exposure call.

From the data feed itself: Paper research. Greater exposure is not better forecasting, and a wider interval is not accuracy (the interval score charges for width). Early and short-notice forecasts are separate groups with separate deadlines. At least 30 independent releases and an untouched prospective comparison are needed before assessing a pattern; even then an edge is not guaranteed. No model-weight training. Results are not trading P&L.
Also from the feed: Recorded forward forecasts, not proven predictive skill. Repeated forecasts of one release count once. Economic data errors and paper trading returns are separate. No consensus feed is configured.
